The lake expressway all the way to Varenna
From Milan to Varenna is about 79 km and about 1 h 25 in normal traffic, starting from Milano Centrale: you follow the SS36 Milan-Lecco, the expressway that runs along the east shore in tunnels, and drop down to the water for the last few kilometres. Here the train is a real alternative: from Centrale to Varenna-Esino it takes about 65 minutes, runs every hour and costs from about 7.40 euro. The last train from Centrale, however, leaves at 21:20, and from Varenna station to the village and the pier there is a walk with your suitcases.
