From central Milan to the Engadine
From Milan to St. Moritz is about 172 km and about 3 h in normal traffic, starting from Milano Centrale. You drive the SS36 along the whole east shore of the lake to Chiavenna, then enter Switzerland and climb into the Engadine over the Maloja pass, with its hairpin bends. It is a mountain road: snow, weekend traffic and border checks make travel times indicative. By train the way is through Tirano on the Bernina railway, a scenic but long trip, with times and fares to check on the operator's timetable.
