To the east shore by way of Lecco
From Malpensa to Varenna is about 98 km and about 1 h 30 in normal traffic. Varenna sits on the east shore, so the route does not pass through Como: from the airport you reach the SS36 Milan-Lecco, the lake expressway, and leave it for the last few kilometres along the water. The train is possible, but via Milan: Malpensa Express to Milano Centrale, 15 euro, then the regional train to Varenna-Esino, about 65 minutes, one an hour, from about 7.40 euro. Two trains, a change in a big station and a final uphill walk with your suitcases.
