From Como to Lugano is about 33 km and about 40 minutes in normal traffic: the Chiasso Brogeda border is a few minutes from the centre of Como, then the Swiss A2 motorway leads straight to Lugano. Switzerland is in the Schengen area, but customs checks remain and at cross-border commuter hours a queue builds at the crossing, so times are indicative. The motorway requires the Swiss vignette, which exists only as an annual sticker. There is also a train between Como S. Giovanni and Lugano: for times and fares check the operator's timetable.
